Companies are no longer judged solely by what they produce, but by what they enable, what they shape, what they protect – and what they expose.
The issue, therefore, is no longer whether business should “engage in politics”. It already does, through the real-world reach of its power: information, infrastructure, technological dependencies, cybersecurity, standards and resilience. Across a growing number of sectors, business now acts on the very conditions of collective life.
The real question is neither moral nor activist. It has become a matter of governance: how can a company exercise influence that has become politically significant without holding a full democratic mandate?
In this context, neutrality is no longer enough. Silence does not erase power; it merely makes it less considered, and therefore more vulnerable. The mature response is neither activism nor withdrawal. It lies in building a doctrine for political exposure: on which issues is the company legitimate in intervening? Against which criteria? Within what limits? Under what governance?
Such a doctrine cannot be decreed. It must be built through methodical work: mapping areas of exposure, formulating principles of intervention, organizing arbitration at the right level of governance and ensuring that real decisions are consistent with institutional communication.
For executive teams, boards, communications, public affairs and risk functions, this is becoming a marker of maturity. The issue is no longer merely to protect the company’s reputation, but to clarify how it exercises power that has become visible, expected and contestable.
